In "Trans-America" terms of roads, railroads and ships were replaced by aircraft, sea vessels and radio beacons/facilities for ship navigation. This way you can run a Transport Tycoon game with a modern interface and new features without the need of the original Microprose version from 1994. The new features include: - A new interface that replaces the old DOS interface. - On screen radar map to keep track of airplanes and ships. - New cities that will serve as stops for all ships and planes.

(transporttycoon. com) Since Transport Tycoon Saved Games are not compatible with the Trans-America, a new version was released that mimics the locations of the original Transport Tycoon. The new cities will be set as their equivalents locations from the original 1994 game. In order to play both games, you need to have two separate folders of the original 1994 Transport Tycoon version, one for each "Trans-America" release.

Trans-America will not run on Windows 8 and at least some versions won't run on Windows 7 either. You can force it to run by setting compatibility mode for the .exe file to Windows XP Service Pack 3 and also disable TLS 1.2 which causes problems on some systems.
